A LONGER
DARK SKIES??
YES! The
Dark Skies Art Festival is growing. You've asked for it you got it! We
have added Thursday and Monday to the next event! Many of you have
expressed the desire to have a longer event and we have heard you! Now
there is more time to make community, art and play together!
Funding?
We are in
the process of setting up a funding process. This is to help promote
ART, MUSIC, RADICAL SELF EXPRESSION and COMMUNITY BUILDING.
Why?
It is our
hope that this process will help the community decide on who and what
VegasArtists.com LLC should fund. Funds are limited, but we believe in
helping to get all types of art and ideas into this realm. The
betterment of expression and experience of the event is the goal. We
also hope this process will foster a friendly competition amongst the
artist community to participate. Also giving the community an
opportunity to have input. Again, funds are limited but we will fund
what the community wants with what we have. We believe in keeping
things out in the open and producing an event YOU believe in and help
to create. After all Dark Skies is YOU!
How does it work?
We will have
a Funding form to fill out online. You will need to provide information
on the what, the why, the costs and the how’s of your idea. Your
submission will be available for the community to see. The community
then has an option to vote yeah and nay on funding the project.
VegasAtists.com will allocate funds based on the response.
Getting
Involved!
It is the
Future…
Just join
the Dark Skies e-group on yahoo, so you can keep in touch and informed
about what is going on in the community
http://groups.yahoo.com/groups/DARKSKIES_LASVEGAS/
Plan a
creation to share with your fellow participates. Do not be afraid to
show us who you are! For under the Dark Skies you are the star! Shine
on!
Thank you
all for your ongoing support, we are very excited about our 3rd Dark
Skies on Roach Lake!
BOOM!

News for November 2005.........
SPACED INVADERS:
Spaced
Invaders, continues to be the ONE First Friday after party not to
miss! Our artists just keep getting better and better with more and
more artists getting involved with us to display and sell art.
Miguel
Rodriguez (himself an awesome artist) has come on board as an assistant
director of art so lets
have a warm welcome for Miguel! Bryan Hawley and Miguel will simply
become unstoppable in regards to promoting and selling local art, watch
out. 'The Theater' where we host Edgar Reyes
and the Soul Kitchen DJ’s every month has become one of the hippest
places in town to see and be seen and it's simply blowing up. And, in
The Thunderbird Lounge we continue
to host some of the best and most cutting edge bands in the area and
regionally.
Plus
we’ve got room specials (availability permitting) and awesome food and
drink specials from The Aruba too. We think we’re on
to something here
and your participation tells us that we are right! So thank you all for
supporting us. Anyone can throw parties or host really good band$, this
is something way different and we feel that this represents the future
of the Las Vegas arts scene. Why? Because you are getting involved. Why
must First Friday end at 10pm? Dunno,
we’re just getting started then! Come down to The Aruba on December 2nd and see
what we mean. Spaced Invaders really is something different.
It's about the art.
DARK SKIES:
Our second Dark Skies Arts Festival on Roach
Lake in October was a huge hit and we are all again deeply humbled by
the energy that is put into this event. Thank you all who particpated
and made something special. We had 320 people on the site for the
weekend with Bands such as DMT, The Mutaytor, Black Jets, and DJ’s from
as far away as San Diego in attendance. Some incredible art was
displayed and some large scale flame effect were in attendance as well.
(yes, that was supposed to
happen) The heavy rains the week before the event which flooded our
site did little to slow us
down, we merely moved the event up on the gravel on the sides of Roach
Lake and away we went. Our post event cleanup
went so smooth, that we
got bored and started cleaning up OTHER PEOPLES TRASH from previous
users of the land. We were pulling TP from the bushes. How's that for
leave no trace?
We’re
already making
plans for the May 2006 Dark Skies. There will be a cap
on the number of
tickets sold, so once
they're gone they will be gone, and our front gate
crew can get onto the business of enjoying the event for a change. or
merely sleeping. We
have a special Yahoo group set up
just for Dark Skies. This
is different than the large main VegasArtists group and is
only about Dark Skies related posts.
Over 2,000 images have
been uploaded to our web site from this
event, go see them here.
Ticket pricing is being worked on as we speak. What do you the participants want? And what do you not want?
And what are you willing to pay for? Fill out this poll and tell us. So far, we think we
have a pretty good handle on what you want. Our first production
meeting for the May '06 event will be at the beginning
of January so GET INVOLVED.
ADDITIONS:
As this takes off, many talented and driven people are
stepping forward to assume roles within the VegasArtists.com
organization.
We’d like to welcome Cindy Spagna who's been expertly
running our front doors for a while now and who is now on board with us
as Administrative Head, and without whom we would be nothing more than
a gibbering heap of beer stained blue jeans. Welcome Cindy!!
As we said
above Miguel Rodriguez (himself an awesome artist) has come on board to
assist with Spaced Invaders and turn the art up to ‘11’. If the
November's Spaced Invaders was any indication, we’re all in for some
awesome stuff.
We'd also like to welcome Randy Winslett, (our site manager in a
dress), who is taking over the web site along with Bryan, this is going
to blow your mind,
trust us.
Special mention must be made at this time to Stacey Mitchell who
got so
many volunteers
involved with Dark Skies that we were turning greeters
away at the front gate! And, to Eric Robello (Big E) who has assumed
the role of fire
chief and all around BAMF.
Many and profuse thanks also go out to
Ben, Pol, Doug, Bam Bam, Bill Nusbaum, Tiya Coleman, and all of our
awesome volunteers who we may have forgotten to thank in this posting
(nothing personal, we’re fried!) for helping to redefine what Las Vegas
is all about and why people come here. Welcome to doing it guys. If we
had known this would be
this much fun we would have been doing this our whole lives. Now we
are, so.... welcome to doing it.
THE FUTURE:
We’re still recovering from Dark Skies and Spaced Invaders
but you should all know that we have some awesome stuff cooking. We’re
not talking about just producing art themed parties as special as that
truly is. We’re
talking about making a genuine difference in people’s lives by
promoting and selling art here in Las Vegas. Talk is
cheap, we’re doing
it. Watch this space and by all means, please GET INVOLVED.
********************************************************
NEWS FOR AUGUST 2005
It’s been a while since we’ve posted any new news on our site. Sorry
about that, we’ve just been busy actually producing events.
Where to start though? Lets see.
SPACED INVADERS
THERE WILL
BE NO SPACED INVADERS ON SEPT 2ND. WE WILL BE AT BURNINGMAN. SEE YOU
ALL ON OCT 7TH!
As you know starting in April we have moved our First Friday after
party SPACED INVADERS over to the Aruba Hotel and it kicks some major
butt too. The sheer energy and quality of what is being presented has
far exceeded our expectations. It’s amazing that what started as some
kids DJ’ing on the street corner is evolving into this and we couldn’t
be happier. From the artists who have displayed (and sold ) with us to
the decorations and visuals in the back, to the awesome live bands
we’ve been hosting, everything is coming together rather nicely. The
Aruba has even agreed to give First Friday room discounts as
availability allows. Quite the makings for the happening scene no
doubt. But it can’t happen without YOU. You are the one’s who will
ultimately decide if this is something that the town needs or not. You
will decide if this is something worth supporting or not. It really is
up to you. And we thank you for your ongoing support, energy, time, and
love. WOW.
DARK SKIES:
Dark Skies kicked ass. We don’t know how else to say it, it simply
rocked. And the next one on October 21-23 is going to rock as well. We
are still deeply humbled by the entire experience. Many ‘firsts’ were
established in the production of Dark Skies. We’re all very proud of
what YOU created here.
Here’s the short list of Dark Skies 'firsts':
1. First event to post the budget both before and
after production showing in almost real time where we were with the
money. It’s all up front, no secrets.
2. First Burningman regional event to actively seek
out other groups. (and we still are, we’re begging people to get
involved and some of them actually might)
3. First legal desert event produced in Las Vegas
(in…. dunno….years? We haven’t’ heard of another one)
4. We actually left no trace. That’s a first for LV
as well. GOOD JOB!
5. First event to hybridize the Burningman culture
with what is going on here in Las Vegas.
6. In May of ’06 it will be the first event to merge
to Burningman regions; L.A. and Vegas in the production elements of the
event. (We’re hoping some others get on board as well)
7.
Why so many firsts? Because this hasn’t been done before
But what of
Dark Skies on October 21-23? (Yes, we’re doing it every 6
months) Well to start with, we learned A LOT from producing the May
event. We are changing a few things slightly to reflect this knowledge.
Namely, is that everyone is buying a ticket to the next one. Everyone.
From the bands to the artists, to those of us actually producing the
event, we’re all contributing something. Of course, working artists
will get a discounted rate. Second, is that we wish to de emphasize the
concert/rave/music festival aspect of Dark Skies. Because Dark Skies is
NOT a concert/rave/music festival, it is a camping trip where
there will be some entertainment presented. It is important that
everyone understands what we’re saying here. We’d rather have 100
people on site that ‘get it’ than 600 that don’t. There are enough
commercial mega events going on (Vegoose, Coachella, Bonnaroo, etc)
without competing with those guys, and why would we? This is different,
and the community has spoken in this regards. Dark Skies is a camping
trip featuring art, performance, and music. It is not a ‘rave featuring
art’, get it? We hope so. And we hope that you will support this effort
by BUYING A TICKET. Because yes, it is about money, and yes, that
money is what produces the event and the next one too. If you want to
see this continue, then buy a ticket. They are $30 right now. They will
be $75 at the gate with proper camping gear.
We have already begun the permitting processes for October’s Dark
Skies. It’s going to happen again so get ready!
THE DARK SKIES
FOUNDATION:
We are slowly working towards the incorporation of a true non-profit,
tentatively called “The Dark Skies Foundation”. The goal of The Dark
Skies Foundation will be somewhat different than what has been done
before with artists groups forming non-profits. The goal of The Dark
Skies Foundation will be to raise money and affect positive change
right here in Las Vegas. Not just by funding art that falls into our
little circle or friends, or that benefits’ our events, but by actually
making a difference in the lives of some Las Vegans who really need our
help. By funding projects that DON’T directly benefit us at all in
fact, with no expectation of anything in return (sound familiar?).
We’re talking about traditional community service and outreach
activities that don’t benefit us at all, but that benefit people who
really need our help right here in Las Vegas. Examples: a family’s home
burns down and they lose everything. A homeless shelter around the
holidays. A women’s shelter. Supporting fire fighters up on Mt
Charleston by making them sandwiches. Blood drives. All of these are
traditional non-arts community activities that we intend to undertake.
And if our history here at VA.com is any indication then ‘it’s simply
gonna happen’ because a lot of thought and foresight is going into this
non profit project. It’s simply where we need to be and what we need to
do. This world have blessed so many of so richly, that we feel
compelled to give something back. We hope you will join us when we
start announcing activities.
Anybody can throw a party, THIS WILL BE DIFFERENT.
BURNINGMAN:
There will
be no Spaced Invaders @ The Aruba in September. We’ll be at
Burningman and most if not all of our production resources will be
there with us. See you all at First Friday in October, on October 7th.
We’ll post pictures from Burningman when we return.
THANK YOU!
THANK YOU all for supporting VegasArtists.com and our various
activities. We believe that is our actions and content that will
ultimately decide if this thing has wings or not. We believe that talk
is cheap, and that anyone can throw a party (for the most part). What
we envision is something very different, which is why we’re continually
reaching out to so many other groups around town. This isn’t about just
us, this is about ALL OF US here in Las Vegas and beyond. And we have
no preconceptions either, something like 5 other groups have attempted
what we’re doing over the years and gone under for various reasons. In
fact many of them are on our advisory panel. We like to think that
what’s keeping this going and growing it, is the sincerity and openness
of what we are doing here. And it is ultimately the community at large
who will determine if this is going to work or not. And we feel that
the best way to accomplish that is to continue to produce the best
events in town period. Many people are talking about it, but we’re
actually doing it. And, our displaying artists have sold over $2,000 in
original art at our events so far this year, and we’re very proud of
that too.
So THANK YOU all again. Thank you for taking the time to read this,
thank you for supporting our events, and thank you for getting involved
because we need you and we support you all.
Bryan & Cameron & ALL of our incredible volunteers.

BLANK CANVAS Is now produced by
LvindyArt.org:
Dan Akins was one of the founding members of the
LVCAG (the former name of VegasArtists.com,LLC) that was started back
in May of 2004. At the time of Dan leaving
VegasArtists.com, in January of this year, The Las Vegas Independent
Art Collective, a.k.a. LvindyArt.org,
Was born.
Blank Canvas being the first of the LVCAG’s Living Events, were simply
a few people bringing out their art and a sound system to the First
Friday street enclosure across from the Funk House for its first 7
months. VegasArtists.com was unable to produce Blank Canvas for the
months of January, February and March due to greater effort being
focused on Spaced
Invaders (our First Friday after party).
Considering Dan’s Love and Hard Work put into the early months of the
event, it only seemed right to pass Blank Canvas from VegasArtists.com
to LvindyArt.org on a hand shake :).
Please show this event your support by stopping by during its 1-Year
anniversary and second month under the direction of LvindyArt.org! We

News
for the week of April 10, 2005
SPACED INVADERS:
Our inaugural run of our First Friday after
party ‘Spaced Invaders’ at The Aruba on
April 1st was a rousing success! Renfield was great even if
they did clear the room (you’re all a bunch of big babies), Edgar and
his crew tore up the lounge, and Macro-Fi displayed some of the most
mind bending art we’ve seen to date, good show! So we’ve have decided
to move Spaced Invaders over there to The Aruba permanently and are
looking forward to what the future holds both for us and for this great
venue. For May, we’ve got some great entertainment and even more great
art for you when VJ Pablo teams up with the Babes
in Sin Burlesque troupe for a multimedia show that will blow your
minds. We’ve produced Kaminari Taiko Drums in a parking lot behind a
laundromat, you think we’re going to steer you wrong? We’re not, so
show up on May 6’th and get ready for some fun. Nobody else is doing
this because YOU are doing this. Be part of it, and get involved. The
line up and information for Spaced Invaders can be found here. http://www.vegasartists.com/spaced.html
THIRD FRIDAY @ The Aruba:
Okay so we blew our wads last month by
hosting both The Bounders and Uberschall on
the same bill. How do we top that? We don’t, there simply is no way.
BUT WE’LL TRY. This Third Friday, April 15th we have more
great acts for you including one of the best vocal groups in town, UPDOG,
performing in the lounge along with another act TBD. We’re very lucky
to get these guys, they will not disappoint you. In the big room in the
back we have a killer line up of DJ’s for you including get this: Erik Rumors, Joshua Adams, Bjorn
Burton, and Edgar Reyes. Damn, we’d pay good money to see these
guys anywhere and we’re only charging $5, which includes UPDOG,
more original art, and that bad ass lineup listed above. This is the
second in the Dark Skies fundraiser series, with all proceeds going to
offset production and permitting costs associated with Dark Skies. You
can see the Third Friday @ The Aruba page here. http://www.vegasartists.com/thirdfriday.html
Please come out and support this event,
maybe some of the galleries will wake up and open their doors as well,
we just could be onto something here, because once a month is simply
not enough. We know you agree.
And as a side bar, Bob from The Aruba has
asked us to tell you all how pleased he is with the crowd that we're
bringing in. I don't know what he was expecting, but he's very pleased
with how well behaved we all are and with the professionalisim of the
DJ's and the acts.
DARK SKIES:
Drum roll please……. DARK SKIES IS MOVING.
It’s still happening, it’s just moving.
Here’s what happened: We’ve had the go
ahead from BLM to produce this event. But it’s
just been a verbal go ahead, with the actual permits being cut after
all the environmental issues had been worked out and insurance is
presented to the BLM. Well as you know the
Arrow Canyon site is a ‘virgin’ site, there’s never been a special
event held there. (nothing legal anyway) So after getting the go ahead
and starting to plan this event, a BLM biologist went up to the Arrow
Canyon site the other day and found, guess what?
Desert Tortoises!
Great.
Now the entire site is off limits to just
about everyone until an environmental impact study can be carried out,
& until special turtle fencing can be installed (at a cost of $8k
per mile) and then the turtles on the site can be physically moved off
to the other side of the turtle fencing. This entire process should
take about 6 months. After which, the site will be cleared for special
events. Still with us here? Good.
Now rather than say “screw you guys, no
event” The BLM has graciously agreed to open their ‘secret maps’ to us
and has proposed several other sites. These are AWESOME camping sites
that we would have never found in a million years by ourselves out
driving around the desert, and trust us, for a year & a half now
we’ve been doing just that; searching for the site to do this kind of
event legally. Ask Cameron to tell you sometime what he’s found right
in our own back yard, it’s amazing. If you think Vegas is just the
Valley you’re sadly mistaken.
So we went out and looked at a few of
these other sites. One was down by Jean/Roach
dry lake bed up on a hillside in an old quarry, great site, could
hold thousands, but windy. Another was down by Lake
Mohave past Nelson on the way to Searchlight, great site but a bit
overgrown, and we doubt they’re going to let us clear cut it so we can
car camp and produce art. Maybe, but probably not.
Finally we come to the
Apex Dry Lake, north of Las Vegas off us I-15.
For several reasons we didn’t want to have
this event on a lake bed, not the least of which was it being perceived
as nothing more than a wannabe clone of Burningman, which has the whole
‘dry lake bed thing’ nailed shut. This is not Burningman, though it is
a sanctioned regional event and we’re very grateful for that, there is
only one Burningman and there will always be only one. This is about us
here in Las Vegas and some regional talent as well. Also, we’ve got
some other unique challenges presenting themselves on a lakebed. You
need carpet in your shade structure to get out of the dust is one that
comes to mind for instance. It’s going to bright and hot out there on
Saturday afternoon is another. There may be Wookies wandering around
too. Okay, maybe there’s no Wookies because then we’d be facing an
environmental Wookie assessment and we’d simply lose our minds at that
point.
There are some positives to this move as
well: First off, camping just got a WHOLE lot easier, you’re no longer
camping on and in rocks, the clay takes 12” tent stakes just great.
Second, you can now bring your bicycles to Dark Skies and ride around
the event, art cars too! Bring ‘em! See how long you can ride
around out there with your eyes closed, we don’t
care, it’s all good. Third, access for cars and production equipment
got way easier. Fourth, as it IS a vast barren wasteland we can do more
and different art that we probably couldn’t have pulled off at Arrow
Canyon. Fifth, this lakebed sits in a depression and is probably going
to be a lot less windy than the Arrow Canyon site, & the views are
still spectacular. Sixth, cell phone coverage!
We all had our hearts set on Arrow Canyon
but it is now gone until at least next years event. So that being said,
we look forward to Dark Skies in its new location and we all know what
a blast we’re going to have at this event. The lakebed is a surreal
place, because there’s nothing out there, we’re bringing it all with
us, and removing it all completely when we’re done. This is an
experiment, and the BLM is watching to see how we do on this one, and
how that will affect future events held on BLM land, not just by us
here in Las Vegas, but all over the west. We know it’s going to kick
ass no matter where we hold it. The art alone is worth the ticket. And
we think that you do to.
And
speaking of tickets…
Advance tickets are currently $30 and go from $30 to $40
starting on April 16. That’s next Saturday. They go to $50 on May 1st.
And they’re $75 at the gate
(with proper camping gear of course). Are you seeing a pattern here? We
need money for production costs, and to present a great event for you.
So if you’re coming to Dark Skies you really need to buy your tickets
in advance. Because at the gate, on Saturday May 21st, they
cost $75 and we’re not putting up with sob stories. Don't miss out on
the best event Las Vegas has seen in years, buy your tickets now. The
Dark Skies page is here http://darkskies.vegasartists.com

IF YOU DON’T READ IT HERE, IT’S NOT HAPPENING.
News for week ending 4/3/05
Wow! What a week it’s been! Where to begin?
THIRD FRIDAY RECAP
We had our first “Third Friday” event over at the Aruba Hotel/
Thunderbird lounge on Friday the 18’th and it was a great success. Not
only did The Bounders kick some major ass laying down the good funk
(damn, you some funky ass white boys!), but Uberschall showed up and
blew some minds with an awesome set of killer beats as well. Our two
DJ’s, Gabriel Andrew and Rob from Hippygroove were awesome and really
helped set the vibe of the whole event. Thanks again guys. The owners
were happy, the bands were happy and we we’re very happy (& deeply
humbled) to raise almost $500 to offset Dark Skies production costs.
This money is directly being funneled into Dark Skies expenses and will
help to bring the event into the black, which is no small feat
considering the history of live events in this town. And that means
that it will probably happen again in October.
The next Third Friday event is April 15.
SPACED INVADERS UPDATE, MOVING FOR APRIL
We have entered into an agreement
with The Aruba to move Spaced Invaders over there for April starting
NEXT WEEK ON
APRIL 1’st. This means (that for April at least), Spaced Invaders WILL
NOT be at Snick’s Place and the Aloha Laundry where we’ve been for the
past 8 months, but instead will be moved over to the Aruba at 1215 Las
Vegas Blvd S. it's 2 blocks south of Charleston on LV Blvd.
On that same note, we have a job opening on April 1’st directing people
from Snick’s over to The Aruba two blocks away. This pays $40 for four
hours of work. 9pm till 1 am. Basically we want you to sit out on the
side of Snick’s and hand out flyers for the new location. Preferably in
costume (we’re thinking a Gorilla would be great, we’ll rent it for
you). Please contact us if you would like to make some easy money next
Friday night.
THE ARUBA/THUNDERBIRD
This new location means that we can finally begin producing full on
bands at our events, which we are unable to do in the parking lot
behind Snick’s. We’ve got a great performance stage, and the room to
produce just about anything. Come on by on April 1’st and check it out.
The Aruba is undergoing some major rehab. Once it’s done, we anticipate
having access to the single best performance and party venue in town.
They’re going to have food 24/7 from a full kitchen. Great drink
prices, and we’re talking to them about room specials as well. This
could (COULD) become the ultimate locals destination on First &
Third Fridays, but only if YOU get involved and participate. Will you?
We hope so, because this place ROCKS!
DARK SKIES
“Dark Skies sucks, don’t go” Our new signature line, what do you think?
We’ve been contacted by no fewer than 3 full on playa theme camps that
want to come out and set up at Dark Skies. We’ve still got a bunch of
‘maybes’ out and the time is quickly approaching when we’re simply
going to have to let those maybes go and lock in these participating
stage producers so they can actually start planning their areas. The
“Yes’s” take precedence over the maybes.
Everything is proceeding on track for this event.
That’s about it for this week. We’re just about done with the lineup
for Spaced Invaders on April 1’st and are VERY EXCITED about the move
to the Aruba. What a great facility, and one that’s sure to become even
more important as this whole arts and underground culture continues to
grow here in Las Vegas.
As usual, THANK YOU for all of your love and support.
The VA.com team.
***********************************************************************
NEWS FOR MARCH 2005
Spaced Invaders in March got rained out.
Spaced Invaders in January got
rained out. Man we hate getting rained out.
THIRD FRIDAY @THE ARUBA
We have added a new monthly event called “Third Friday @ The Aruba” and
are holding this at The Aruba hotel (imagine that) which is at 1215 Las
Vegas Blvd S. The Aruba is 2 blocks south of Charleston on The
Strip.
We are kicking this off on Friday, March 18’th from 9pm until 3 am or
whenever, and we are very excited about this event. Because we finally
have a place to produce full on live bands!! We’ve brought you a lot of
great
entertainment, from Kaminari Taiko to Meat Over Moscow, but what’s been
lacking is a place to produce live bands, and now we have it. So, with
that in mind we are very happy to announce that for our first Third
Friday we are hosting The Bounders, one of Las Vegas’s premier live
bands! We’re thrilled to be hosting these guys. We had them at Spaced
Invaders in December and right in the middle of their set the cops came
and shut them down. Hopefully Third Friday will make that up to them.
There’s also a rumor about some ‘other’ band, we cant tell you the name
because it’s not confirmed yet, but we can tell you that the name
rhymes with “scoo ler ball”, you do the math. The next 2 Third Friday’s
are in actuality, fundraisers for The
Dark Skies Arts Festival, which
is being held May 20-22 out in the desert. (see below)
SPACED INVADERS
So, Spaced Invaders for March got rained out, and we’re going to try it
again in April (we must be crazy), and most of the acts that canceled
in March have agreed to return for April 1st and try it again. Bless
them. We’ve been having a blast these past few months at Spaced. And
it’s due in no small part to you, the freaks and artists of Las Vegas.
Because without you there participating in this event, it would just be
another party. And really, aren’t there enough of those around already?
Keep coming, keep watching and keep on keeping on, because we can tell
from the turn outs, that this is something you want more of. And that’s
why we’re here. As it says in our charter “to produce a series of
events..” and that exactly what we’re doing. We even had artists sell
just under a thousand dollars worth of art in February. Not too shabby
at all. Good job. That gets us off.
DARK SKIES.
You KNOW we’ve been waiting for this part of the news, he he he. The
Dark Skies Arts Festival has been given the green light by the BLM.
This means that we are forging ahead full steam on this event.
Here’s the latest:
* We have the website roughed in and have begun
selling tickets.
* Jimy Cressy has agreed to produce the live bands stage, called The
Area 51 Stage (sound familiar? It should) this means we’re probably
going to have most of the best live bands in town out there, (wow!).
There’s even rumors of an awesome regional act showing up at the A51
stage as well. We don’t want to spill those beans quite yet.
* On our stage The Dark Skies Stage, we have booked from L.A. burner
favorite THE MUTAYTOR for Saturday night!
And just for good measure we added DJ
Wolfie
* Erik Rumors
has agreed to produce Friday night at the DS stage (!) which means that
Friday is going to be every bit as good as Saturday. And ‘rumor (s)’
has it (I kill me) that some secret weapons are getting involved from
as far away as San Francisco & San Diego. One thing’s for sure, if
Erik says it’s going off you can take that to the bank. Did we
mention that we're freakin'?
* We’re renting a VDOSC sound system (if god a P.A.
he’d have a VDOSC) with 6 18”s a side on the low end. You want more low
end? Set dynamite off in your pants, tough guy.
* Jacie
Maynard of the CAC has agreed to curate the art canyon!! (we’re in
awe). And
we’re hoping that Feather will bring his new large format work out for
a black light/psytrance area. Man that would be killer.
* Fire artists with propane cannons from L.A. are getting involved.
* Our fire czar Randall is planning several thing that go boom, and we
have given him his own area for this called “The Temple Of Boom” but
really we like the original name of “Uncle Randall’s Happy Time Boom
Boom Fun Zone” it just has a nicer ring to it.
* We’ve got a bunch of ‘maybes’ still out on people to produce the
Canyon stage and the Chill Lounge. It will happen. And we realize that
producing a stage for the whole weekend at an event like this is a VERY
daunting task. It’s a lot of work. We’re hoping some of these guys
cooperate and collaborate on a joint project or two. We have the space
boys! Get on board.
OPEN MEETING
Finally, we’re having an open meeting on Saturday night at Dennis
Nordin’s house to talk about all of this stuff and anything else you’d
like to talk about. For those of you that don’t know, Dennis is the guy
with the toy covered art car that you’ve seen down at First Friday, and
get this; his WHOLE HOUSE looks like that, inside & out it’s
absolutely amazing! The meeting is Saturday, March 12 at 7pm sharp.
Dennis’s house is located at 6012 Oceanside
NEW LOGO
We've ditched the laser warning logo and Bryan has expertly designed a
new logo which will be up on our front page in the next day or so. It
rocks, and Bryan rocks for taking the initiative on this. Thanks Bry!
That’s about it, hope to see you at the meeting or the next one to be
announced in the next couple of days. And as always THANK YOU for all
of your love, support, and yes, even advice, because we actually DO
listen to some of it!

NEWS FROM FEBRUARY 2005
VegasArtists.com has undergone the
following structural changes
Sadly, Dan
Akins has left to pursue other interests. Knowing that no one can
fill Dan’s shoes,
with optimistic hearts we wish him nothing
but love and luck on
his journeys as we also
look forward to
producing some future events with him, like soon.
That brings us
to the point in this thing where we announce that Bryan Hawley
Has enthusiastically
stepped up to fill the roll that Dan invented, as
Entertainment
Director, and give him the floor. So everybody please welcome
Bryan. With the
energy he brings to the table, it should be a lot of fun.
Bryan continues:
Just a few things.
First, I am
both honored and pleased to have Dan and Cameron's trust and
support during this
transition and in the future to come.
Secondly, very
much interested in the whole of the production process,
I will be focusing a
lot of energy on Spaced Invaders. Not only scheduling and
booking will be my
main concern but, under Gene Gunnels of Imagination Concepts
(he's the
guy who does the spandex sails, and he's a total BAMF)
support and
direction I hope to make the walls breathe and the atmosphere thick
with
the personality of each months Party.
Third, On behalf of
Dan, Cameron and Myself, I would like to thank the following people for
there Love and Support over the last Eight months.
Gene Gunnels, Chuck
Gronbach, Edgar Reyes, Johny Vibe, Greg at the Aloha Laundromat,
Dominick at Snicks
Place, Dana Greenwald, Sheena (GoGo) F. and Julie of
Distrukto Mizuno,
Feather and Wilma at feather@uvart.org, Cayce Clayton, Billy Bob and
Cayce. Most of whom were down with the DPP!
!SEE YOU THERE!
Cameron And Bryan
IN OTHER NEWS
February’s Spaced Invaders
is going to be a big one including Kaminari Taiko performing under the
lights in the Chill Space out back (be there by 10:00, don't be late)
And our first formal
hosting of Dray
(!) among other incredibly talented individuals, such
as our featured artist this month, Yves of ybdigitals. We're also very
blessed to have both Leslie Rowland, and Raymond Ansotegui showing as
well. Read the whole lineup HERE.
DARK SKIES
We are currently in
talks with several different land managers in regards to producing our
second desert art event “The Dark Skies Arts Festival” to be held in
May of 2005. Watch this space, closely.
FREE WEB SPACE
And as usual, we are
still offering FREE WEB SPACE to any local artists who need it. We’ll
even help you set up your page, because your stuff should be out there
for everyone to see. Don't be scared, it's way easy! So this means if
we walk up to you and ask "so where's your web site?" and your answer
is "I dunno" then we're simply going to have to exploit you and show
you to the world, sorry. (not really, it's what we do)
THE VEGAS
LIST
The long awaited
Calendar Project is just about done! This is going to be so bad ass, we
hope you will use it because its going to be great.
Here's the deal;
We're creating a free community calendar based on the hugely successful
"Squid List" from the Bay Area. If you've never heard of the Squid List
go see it HERE. Take a minute to surf it's
features, particularly the rather elegant form that you use to input
events. Keep in mind that it is the Bay area, and they have been at it
for like 6 years or something.
Sound like
fun? Imagine every underground, art, off beat, performance, indy, and
just
plain wrong event that's happening here in Las Vegas being in one place
so that at a glance you knew what was happening around town on a given
day? What could you and your projects do with that? Would you post your
events? We hope so.
That's
about it for
now, thank you for all of your love & support because without you
we are nothing.
